People have actually been eating low carbohydrate diets for a number of years, and it was a well known fact that one of the easier ways for you to lower your body weight was to cut out some of the high carbohydrate foods, such as bread. Absolutely, the weight will come off quickly if you’re able to stick with it. That being said, however, there are a few things that you should be aware of whenever you decide to go on a low carb diet.

The first thing that you should understand is the fact that the reason people lose weight when they seriously restrict their carbohydrate intake is because they put their body into a chemical state that is known as ketosis. During ketosis, the body begins burning fat for fuel and instead of the usual carbohydrates, simply because they are not available. Since you’re eating a diet that is almost entirely comprised of meats and fats, you’re not giving your body the carbohydrate fuel that it usually uses.

The problem with this is that ketosis, although it is beneficial for weight loss is not necessarily something that is going to be beneficial for your health and personally I don’t think it can be classed as healthy eating. It is a problem that diabetics spend the majority of their time trying to avoid, and they can be detrimental to your health if you stay on it for an extended time period. It is also thought that the process of ketosis is eating away at your internal organs at the same time as it is burning fat for fuel.

Although it certainly is possible for you to lose weight using a low carb diet, I would suggest that you go on a calorie restricted diet and eat healthy foods. You will also lose weight using this method but you will be able to do so without the damaging effects that a low carbohydrate diet can cause. Personally, I tried the low carb diet and found that in order for it to be sustainable (and easy to do) I had to find a balance between normal carb intake and ‘Atkins’ carb intake (which is very low). By finding a balance, it certainly helped me lose more stomach fat as that is where most of your carbs are stored (especially for men).
